Establishing new water and wastewater service with Madison Utilities is simple and secure. You can complete most requests online, confirm your service area, and review any required deposits or forms before moving in or out.

What to Know Before You Start
First, confirm that your address is within Madison, AL city limits using our online GIS mapping system located here. If you’re moving into a property that already has Madison Utilities service, make sure to apply at least one business day before your move-in date to avoid delays.
Gather the following documents you will need when you apply online or in person:
- Valid Driver’s license
- Social security card
- Rental or Purchase Agreement
Be prepared to pay a deposit and the new service fee at the time that new residential water and wastewater service is being established.

- Standard 5/8″ Household Meter (w/sewer): $200.00
- Standard 5/8″ Household Meter (w/o sewer): $100.00
- Standard 5/8″ Irrigation Meter: 150.00

Request Setup of a Second Water Meter
Installing a second meter for lawn irrigation can help lower your wastewater bill. Because water used for irrigation does not enter the sanitary sewer system, no wastewater fee is charged for the second meter. Second meters may be installed if certain requirements are met. Before applying for your building permit, you must first apply for water and wastewater service with Madison Utilities. Our Customer Service team will assist you with completing the application and calculating the applicable fees.

Deposit
You will have to pay a deposit to setup service. The deposit is calculated/quoted for each account based on the type of usage expected.
Once your fees are paid, bring your receipt to City Hall (Planning, Engineering & Building Department) to complete your building permit application.

What do I need to start new service?
You’ll need a valid driver’s license, Social Security card, and either a rental or purchase agreement. Deposits and a $50 new service fee apply when establishing residential service.
Can I start my service online?
Yes. Most customers can apply online using the Start Service Application. Once your request and deposit are processed, you’ll receive a confirmation email with your start date.
How far in advance should I request service?
We recommend submitting your start-service application at least one business day before your move-in date to ensure water is on when you arrive.
How much is the deposit for new service?
Deposits depend on the type of meter:
- $200 – Standard residential with sewer
- $100 – Standard residential without sewer
- $150 – Irrigation meter
Deposits are applied to your final bill when the account closes.
