Madison Utilities provides safe drinking water and reliable wastewater treatment services to protect public health and preserve the environment. From our source water at the Tennessee River to our advanced treatment plants, every part of the system is designed to deliver clean water and responsibly manage what goes down the drain. Clean, dependable drinking water is our top priority. Madison Utilities conducts thousands of water quality tests each year to ensure compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act.
Our primary source is the Tennessee River, treated at the Quarry Water Treatment Plant and supported by additional well systems throughout Madison. We publish detailed Water Quality Reports each year to share results and maintain transparency. Learn more about how we treat, test, and protect your drinking water on the Water Quality page.
Madison Utilities encourages voluntary water conservation year-round. Smart water use helps preserve our shared resources, reduce energy consumption, and prepare for future growth.
From efficient irrigation practices to leak prevention, small actions make a lasting difference. You can view current conservation conditions and easy household tips on the Water Conservation page.
Madison Utilities collects and treats wastewater from homes and businesses throughout the service area. Our Wastewater Treatment Plant removes contaminants, protects local waterways, and ensures safe discharge under Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) permits.
Proper household habits—like avoiding “flushable” wipes, grease, and other harmful materials—help prevent backups and costly damage. Learn what you can and cannot flush on the Wastewater page.
Madison Utilities’ Fat, Oil, and Grease (FOG) Program protects the sewer system from blockages caused by grease buildup. The program includes education for residents and compliance requirements for food service businesses that use grease interceptors or traps.
Learn how to prevent grease-related plumbing issues and view maintenance guidelines on the FOG Program page.
Every customer plays an important role in maintaining the quality and sustainability of Madison’s water and wastewater systems. Together, we can ensure that clean water remains available today—and for future generations.
